One distinction I think about is “building” versus “growing”.
In “building” there’s an elaborate story-building mission beforehand where the future is architected and then built out.
In this process, it’s difficult to receive feedback from reality, because the story was created in a vacuum, without reality guiding it.
In “growing” the story-building process is sequentially and iteratively built out through a constant interaction with reality. Each step is simply in the “right direction”, which is determined by a well-defined set of needs, values, goals.
In each step, everything can remain in alignment. Feelings can be felt. Stories can be reassessed. And each step can recalibrate based on today’s learnings, constantly guided by reality.
So the key question is: what’s the next step?
